“Avatar” Might Return

In the words of James Cameron, Avatar got “stomped” by Alice in Wonderland. So its no wonder that he is a little cheesed now that Alice in Wonderland is the hot topic on everyone’s mind so soon to the success of Cameron’s hit film. Cameron claims that one of the main reasons for this is that ‘Avatar’ had to give up the limited number of 3D theaters to make way for the new film. Cameron says “The word we’re getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result”. How to solve this problem and set Cameron’s mind at ease? The director proposes to re-release the hit film in the fall. The question is, will people still pay to go see this movie after its already out on DvD/Blue-ray. To address this issue, Cameron suggests to add an additional 40 minutes of directors cut footage and remaster it to fit in with the rest of the movie. In a USA Today interview Cameron mentioned that he is working on converting Titanic to 3D and plans to release it in 2012 as part of a 100th year anniversary of the incident.

I could see these propositions making Cameron and other people a lot of money. To me though it seems that he is just mad at the huge success that Alice in Wonderland is getting, that it drowns out the success of ‘Avatar’ a little. I can understand his frustration, he worked especially hard on both Avatar and Titanic but take loosing like a champion… bow in respect. However clinging on to the the fame of Avatar and Titanic does stand to get Cameron even more money to fill his wallet so I say “Go for it man! More power to you”.

Sounds like BS to me. I wouldn’t pay to see it again, nor Titanic. The costs of advertising such a thing might be bigger than the revenue brought back by the re-release itself.
