Box Office Movies Also Releasing to Home

On November of 2009 the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America, Inc.) requested from the FCC (Federal Communications Commissions) to broadcast movies straight into people’s homes that have just been released from theaters or just a few weeks after release. Yesterday the the FCC approved this request and it is official that this change is going to happen in the near future. The only reason this request was approved sooner is because the industry needed a better way to protect against potential bootleggers but now there is a better “selectable output control” to off HD movies securely.

Does this spell doomsday for theaters? According to Bob Pisano who is the President and Interim CEO of the MPAA…

This action is an important victory for consumers who will now have far greater access to see recent high definition movies in their homes. And it is a major step forward in the development of new business models by the motion picture industry to respond to growing consumer demand. We deeply appreciate the recognition by the FCC that recently released movies need special protection against content theft when they are distributed to home televisions.

The first, and best way to view movies will always be in movie theaters – and nothing can replace the pleasure this brings to millions and millions of people all across our country and the globe. But for those people unable to make it to the theater and interested in viewing a recently released movie, thanks to the FCC, they will now have a new option. For other consumers who prefer standard, linear, on-demand or DVD or Blu-ray options, these services will be unchanged.

When it comes to movie screens size matters, so theaters are the best way to view movies and I hope that is enough to keep them in business. There is a lot of movies coming out that is going to be good but not good enough to see in theaters but if I had the convenience to see them in my own home then I might actually pay to see them. What about all of you out there, what do you all think about this… for it or against it?
