The Lightnin Thief

Lightning Thief, Legendary or Disappointment

After personally watching The Lightning Thief in theaters I would have to say that I was let down by the story line. There were a couple key elements that they chose to leave out of the movie that cheapened it. For instance, the creators chose to leave out the feud between Ares (the god of war) and Percy Jackson, in the book there is an epic sword battle between the two of them.

(SPOILER ALERT)

They make it unbelievably obvious in the movie that Luke is the villain completely cutting out the twist of the book. There are many other alterations that they made to the movie but the Ares change was the most upsetting. Since Chris Columbus directed Harry Potter 1-3 I would have thought that he of all people would of understood the importance of being accurate to the book as much as possible. Having said all this, the movie did have a few impressive special effects and the actors portraying the characters did a fair job. They completely tied up the movie and didn’t leave much room for a sequel, the second book is all about Thalia’s Tree and they didn’t even bother mentioning it in the movie. Being a fan of the books, I am glad that I saw the movie and if they came out with another movie I would see it too but I wouldn’t have my hopes up so high on the second installment.
