Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
So wow, Michael Cera is quickly moving his way up my favorite actors list. This is the perfect movie for any nerd out there, or any old school fighting game fan. The trailer starts off as a chick flick lovey dovey type movie then takes a complete 180 and some classic comic style fighting mixed with modern visual effects. The reason for the interesting style of fighting is because its based off a popular Oni Press comic book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley. This movie just has my name written all over it.
As you watch the trailer you will see that Michael Cera character Scott Pilgrim works up the nerve to talk to a girl at a party. Scott and Ramona (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) fall in love and everything is going swell. Except one day when one of her 7 ex-evil-boyfriends shows up wanting to kill Scott. One by one Ramona’s ex-boyfriends take Scott by surprise and try to kill him out of jealousy for dating Romana. Using fighting styles that you would typically find in the original Batman live action show, the movie uses words during the fight such as ‘Kapow’ but mixes in some pretty cool looking visual effects.
True the movie is probably only doing this uniquely done fighting style as a gimmick to try and get people in the seats. I could also just see it as a metaphor for an actual fight just seen through the Oni Press comic perspective and I’m sure the fans of the comic are going to appreciate it. The movie material itself may not be all that great but just by watching the trailer… I’m sold.
